Social and Community Work

Social and Community Work

The Mission Service enables, empowers and equips local mission, helping it flourish in communities. It supports The Salvation Army’s five territorial mission priorities as we continue to explore how we faithfully ‘Love God and Love Others’.

The Mission Service brings together a range of centralised services, including homelessness support, addictions services, older people’s community support, anti-trafficking and modern slavery work, chaplaincy, employment support, debt advice, early years provision, refugee support and emergency response support.

It also provides Family Tracing services, supports refugees, manages international development projects and offers direct support to local corps churches.

This work is delivered by officers, employees, volunteers and local Salvation Army members as part of their personal commitment and covenant.

Employed Spiritual Leadership

Employed Spiritual Leadership

Our Employed Spiritual Leadership framework helps open new pathways into ministry and strengthens the way we respond to local missional need. By widening access to spiritual leadership roles, it supports greater flexibility, encourages emerging leaders and helps local settings respond more quickly to mission opportunities.

These roles require enhanced assessments to ensure safeguarding and fitness for Salvation Army spiritual leadership, and a requirement to sign a code of practice which clarifies expectations and accountability for ministry.

Employed spiritual leaders within The Salvation Army include:

  • Corps leaders: leaders of Salvation Army worshipping communities who mobilise Salvationists for mission.
  • Pioneer leaders: leaders responsible for developing new, fresh expressions of The Salvation Army.
  • Chaplains: leaders sent by The Salvation Army to serve a community, such as a Lifehouse for people experiencing homelessness or a prison, as well as various part-time and volunteer roles in local communities. Chaplains help people explore Christian faith and signpost to Christian communities.

This approach also recognises and develops existing leadership models and practices, helping to ensure that spiritual leadership remains responsive, sustainable and rooted in the mission of The Salvation Army.
